What materials are wall blocks and hollow blocks made of?

The type of material used to produce concrete blocks and hollow blocks determines the important parameters of the walls made from them. What are the characteristics of elements made of concrete, expanded clay concrete and slag concrete? Let's learn about their properties and applications.

Concrete wall elements

Aggregate concrete elements, suitably vibrated, are invariably very popular. Elements made of properly vibrated aggregate concrete are invariably very popular. Solid or hollow (to be filled with concrete on site), they form a group of products with a wide range of applications, enabling the construction of load-bearing and curtain walls, internal structural walls, partition walls, foundation walls, basement walls, slotted walls and retaining walls. They are also suitable for the construction of fences and openwork walls. Depending on the structural requirements of the project, the blocks and hollow blocks are made of concrete of different grades, e.g. C12/15, C16/20, C20/25. These products are characterised by ease of installation and processing, allow for precise results, and have good resistance parameters, including resistance to compression, fire, frost, and noise (e.g. acoustic concrete block 18). compression, fire and frost, and selected solutions also reduce noise (e.g. 18 acoustic concrete block).

Expanded clay concrete wall elements

A good way to build a solid, durable and user-friendly house is to use expanded clay concrete elements. This ecological aggregate based on clay is characterised by its lightness, very good thermal and acoustic insulation properties, high vapour permeability, resistance to fire and frost, and low water absorption. It therefore creates excellent conditions in terms of thermal insulation, humidity and noise reduction. Walls made of this material dry quickly, which makes it easier to restore the building to a usable condition in case of prolonged contact with water. Expanded clay concrete blocks are intended for the construction of external and internal load-bearing walls, partition walls or foundation walls. Selected models (such as LECA® acoustic blocks 18 and 18g) are a practical way to improve sound insulation between flats in multi-family housing.

Slag concrete wall elements

Another group of frequently used elements are breeze blocks and breeze block paving made of slag concrete – aggregates with a relatively low weight and low price. Manufactured from furnace slag, they are suitable for load-bearing external and internal walls as well as partition walls, providing an alternative to ceramic or expanded clay concrete products. Their advantages include lightness, ease of processing and high compressive strength.
